active voice: Sentences where the subject is the doer of the action, not the receiver of the action. This is contrasted to the passive voice where the subject is receiving the action.

Some examples:

        I shot the elephant four times before it fell.

        She jumped the fence.

The active voice is thought to be more brisk and vigorous, and, hence, preferable to the passive voice.
