Dialogue: Asking a Co-worker to Cover a Shift

A: Hello.

B: Good morning, Dave! Did I wake you up?

A: No, no. I was awake. I was just enjoying my morning coffee in fact. What can I do for you?

B: Well, I’m sorry for calling so early but I have a bit of an emergency.

A: What’s up?

B: Well, I’m supposed to work this afternoon but something’s come up so I need someone to cover my shift.

A: I’m not doing anything today. I can cover for you. What time are you scheduled to work?

B: From 1:00 till 9:00.

A: Okay. But you’d better clear it with Joan first.

B: I was going to call her as soon as I hang up.

A: Great. If I don’t hear back from you I’ll assume I’m covering for you.

B: Thanks. You’re a lifesaver. I really appreciate it.
