sheltered instruction: Using simplified English in a classroom for students who don't speak English as a first language.  Students do not specifically study English but receive content based instruction (such as math, science, or social studies) in simplified English. The language input from the teacher and textbooks is simplified to make it accessable to these students. There is some controversy about how long a student should remain in sheltered instruction.
