R-Controlled Vowel Words Worksheets and Teaching Resources
R-controlled vowels, which are also referred to as bossy R, are vowels that are modified in sound by the R that follows them. Some examples are the AR in car, the IR in girl, the UR in turn, the OR in fork and the ER in tiger.
I generally teach r-controlled vowels sometime after teaching vowel digraphs. A lot of the games offered on this site combine vowel digraphs with r-controlled vowels.
Note: R-controlled vowels are treated differently in rhotic and non-rhotic dialects of English. These resources might not be as useful to teachers from Australia, New Zealand, or England who speak and teach a non-rhotic dialect.
