Purpose and Audience: The purpose of these materials is to get students to practice talking about the jobs and requirements. The audience is adult false beginners.
Target Language: Describing benefits and drawbacks of jobs such as high pay, long hours, dangerous work. Talking about obligations using 'have to', 'must', and 'need to'.
Warm up: Discuss the benefits of being a King Crab fisherman and the drawbacks with class. Go over some vocabulary that students might not know such as 'physically fit' or 'drawback'. As an optional exercise you can do the Job Requirements Table. The Help-wanted Ads Information Gap also covers the same materials nicely but you'll need more than 1 hour to do both the gap and the role-play.
Activity: Hand out the activity sheet to every student and one job description card to every student. Then, invite one student to the front of the class to model the mechanics of the role-play. The student just has to read from the dialogue so it won't be that difficult. Before I do that I write a sample 'King Crab' fisherman ad on the board so that the students can make the connection between the role-card and the activity sheet. (The King Crab ad is not included in the role cards so you'll just have to make it up using the writing on the activity sheet). Then let the students go at it in an open area of the classroom. It can take between 30 and 40 minutes (or more depending on how many jobs you want them to hear).
As a wind-up activity students can sit in groups and discuss what job they liked the most ofr the ones they heard or you can just as the students in front of the class.
